We have the pleasure to inform you that Department of Forensic Sciences Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics University of Wrocław, Poland on October 7-9, 2020 will organize International Scientific Conference "19th Wrocław Symposium on Questioned Document Examination". Main subjects of the Symposium are:

1. Contemporaty trends in questioned document examination.
2. Contemporary trends in handwriting examination.
3. Handwriting examination versus graphology.
4. Examination of initials and graphometry.
5. Pathology in handwriting examination.
6. Examination of signatures. Specific character of testament examination.
7. Control of qualifications of an expert witness.
8. Current issues in questioned document examination (physical and chemical analysis of ink, toner, cross strokes, paper, indented writing).
9. Age of documents (problems with destructive and non-dectructive methods).

In our Symposium's (as in the previous years) will be attended by experts on document examination from Switzerland, Lebanon, India, USA, Latvia, Estonia, Holland, France, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Argentina, Australia, Portugal, Romania, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Greece, Serbia, and Russia. Many Polish guests representing major universities and non-academic centres, such as police and national forensic laboratories, Jan Sehn Institute of Forensic Sciences in Kraków as well as independent experts. They will be joined by representatives of areas related to forensic science – especially penal procedure, criminology, psychology, psychiatry and forensic chemistry.

The Symposium is one of very few scientific endeavours in Europe devoted to this subject area, since 1983 taking place every 2 years in Wrocław.

Research

Within the statutory scope of its activity the Department of Forensic Science conducts the following research:

1. Use of polygraph examination by the system of justice

2. Crime against monuments of architecture and works of art

3. Handwriting examination

4. Factors distorting handwriting

5. Psychology and pathology of handwriting

6. Technical (questioned) examination of documents (ink and paper analysis, indented writing, ink dating, print and printer analysis, typewriter examination, etc.)

The research in the above-mentioned areas is carried out in the Department’s own forensic laboratory together with practical training sessions for graduate and post-graduate students.

The academic staff of the Department conducts lectures and seminars in the following subjects:

1. Forensic science (Law)

2. Evidence from judicial expert examination (Law)

3. Security of business activity (Law)

4. Forensic examination of genuineness of public documents (Law, Administration)

5. Judicial archaeology (Law)

6. Forensic science in administration (administration)

7. Legal protection of cultural heritage (Law, Administration)

8. Forensic theories of investigative process (Law)

Thanks to co-operation with the Department of Chemistry (University of Wrocław) students of our Faculty may participate in classes of forensic chemistry.

Additionally, in their 4^th year full-time, part-time and extramural students of law have lectures and classes in forensic science. During the classes and seminars they participate in staged procedural-forensic activity, such as inspection of the place of event, search, laboratory experiment, procedural-forensic experiment, expert examination (examination of documents, polygraph examination, examination of works of art, ballistic examination, examination of firearms, toolmarks examination).

The Department offers MA seminars in forensic science for full-time, part-time and extramural students of law and of administration as well as two-semester post-graduate studies (for more information see:

From 2009 the Department offers a training course in “Crime Detection” (for more information see: the bookmark Kursy Dokształcające (Training Courses) on the Department’s home page).

The Department conducts expert examination for the system of justice (courts), law enforcement (prosecution, police, other services) as well as companies and private individuals in the following areas:

1. Complex examination of classic documents:

- graphic and comparative examination of handwriting (including signatures and initials)

- examination of texts created by technical means (computer printers, print, typewriters)

- examination of stamps and seals

- examination of documents by physical and chemical means, including: establishing age of documents (thanks to co-operation with Department of Chemistry, University of Wrocław), identification of inks and toners, examination of paper, examination of invisible text with the use of Electrostatic System Detection Apparatus (ESDA).

2. Polygraph examination determining emotional connection of subjects with the event, enabling to eliminate the unjustly suspected subjects.

3. Examination of works of art:

- paintings, ceramics, swords, firearms, archaeological artefacts.

4. Forensic-archaeological examination:

- prospection

- search, exploration and identification of graves

- anthropological reconstruction of faces

5. Consultancy:

Recognition and identification of various manifestations of social pathology

- modus operandi – cults, sects, rituals

- crime against church property

- psychopathology of social groups

- forensic profiling

- security and protection of social order (consultations for the representatives of public administration)

The examination is carried out by experienced experts in a laboratory with state-of-the-art specialist equipment, enabling comprehensive physical and chemical examination:

1. comprehensive examination of documents: FTIR Spectrum Two, VSC2000/HR (Video Spectral Comparator Foram 685-2 (Raman Spectrometer), Super Macro Photography Equipment, ESDA (electrostatic System Detection Apparatus), gas chromatograph with mass detection or flame-ionisation, highly efficient liquid chromatograph (HPLC) with detection of UV or differential refractometer.

2. polygraph examination: Lafayette polygraph.
